Schedule for Glaspell Events at the NY Public Theatre Nov 15 & 16!

Beyond the performances of Glaspell’s The Verge at the New York Public Theatre, which runs from October 27 through November 22, there are three other Glaspell events taking place on November 15 & 16:

PUBLIC FORUM: Trifles, Sunday, November 15 @ 5PM
A company led by actress Cynthia Nixon will present Susan Glaspell’s 1916 masterpiece, based on a true story, then talk about the urgent questions it continues to raise today about gender, justice, and more.
For reservations for this event, go to: https://publictheater.org/reserve/reserve?performanceNumber=56247

SYMPOSIUM: Susan Glaspell Comes Home, Monday, November 16 @ 5PM, Venue: LuEsther Hall
This special discussion event, led by The International Susan Glaspell Society, will feature presentations by some of the world’s foremost authorities on her extraordinary life and work, followed by an open discussion of her legacy today. Presenters Sharon Friedman, J. Admission is free and open to the public.

WHAT’S PAST IS PROLOGUE: Inheritors, Monday, November 16 @ 7PM

Fiasco Theatre presents “The Verge” @ New York’s The Public Theatre

Beginning October 27 and continuing until November 22, Fiasco Theatre will be presenting Glaspell’s masterpiece “The Verge” at New York’s Public Theatre. Jesse Austrian directs this new production. This is an exciting event for our Society and for those who have championed Glaspell’s plays. Here is how they are describing this play and production:

“This fall, Fiasco Theater and The Public partner to celebrate a hidden American classic: THE VERGE by Susan Glaspell, Pulitzer Prize winner and founder of the Provincetown Players. In Glaspell’s 1921 masterpiece, botanist Claire Archer is on a quest to create a new life: a plant unlike any that has ever come before. When her husband, lover, and soulmate each arrive in her greenhouse seeking heat in a snowstorm, chaos ensues. But as Claire pushes—sometimes violently—against the constraints of her own good breeding, she wonders if the only way to transcend boundaries is to destroy them. By turns witty farce, devastating philosophical debate, and scathing feminist cry, THE VERGE defies genre and pierces the bounds of theatrical realism.”

The Society is working with Fiasco, Expand the Canon, and the Public to develop events around this production, including a panel discussion and readings of other Glaspell plays, currently scheduled for November 15 and 16. There will be a “symposium” to discuss “The Verge” production and related Glaspell works and topics on Monday, November 16 (exact time/location tba). Seating will be limited, so the staff at the Public has asked us to provide a list of ISGS colleagues who plan to attend, so that they can reserve the right number of seats. Please email J. Ellen Gainor at jeg111@cornell.edu by Tuesday, October 6 if you would like to be included on that list of attendees.

We will post more information as it is finalized. To access the Public’s website and tickets, go to

New information RE: Washington Square Players and Glaspell:
“Washington Square Players Present Bill of Novelties” Christian Science Monitor 15 November 1916, p. 11. (no author listed).  The quite detailed review of this production of Trifles covers the play as part of the Second Bill of their Third Season (1916-17).
Also see the dissertation on the Washington Square Players by Eugene M. Wank:  “The Washington Square Players: Experiment Toward Professionalism” Ph.D. Dissertation. University of Oregon, 1973.
What is interesting here is the information about the company’s presentation of multiple works by Glaspell—not only Trifles, but also Suppressed Desires in 1918 (why did they change their mind about this??), and Close the Book (1918).  Trifles, moreover, was revived as part of a “Special Suffrage Week” bill sponsored by the Woman’s Suffrage Party, beginning March 12, 1917.
The Wank dissertation draws considerably on archival materials related to core members of the group, especially Edward Goodman’s (husband of Lucy Huffaker) files in the NY Public Library, but it’s not clear if the archival materials provide anything on Glaspell.

Pioneering Women Producers

J. Ellen Gainor lectured on Glaspell at an event hosted by the League of Professional Theatre Women on Monday, May 14, 2012 at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center, 365 Fifth Avenue @ 35th Street, New York City.
The documentary film, “Sweet Tornado: Margo Jones and the American Theater,” was shown, followed by a Q&A and a panel. Ellen’s panel also featured Helen Sheehy on Eva Le Gallienne, Wendy Anne Vierow on Margaret Webster, and Susan Quinn on Hallie Flanagan, followed by a reception.
